Privacy Policy

MyPiece is a static editorial site. There are no accounts to create and nothing to log in to, so we collect very little. This explains what little there is.

1

What we collect

Because MyPiece has no accounts, listings, or user submissions, the information involved is limited to:

  • What you email us. If you write to us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to put in the message.
  • Basic technical data. Like almost any website, our host automatically records things such as your IP address, browser and device type, and which pages were requested — used to keep the site running, secure, and fast.
  • Advertising and analytics signals. Google tags may send limited cookieless consent and measurement pings while storage consent is denied. Where you grant the relevant consent, Google AdSense and Google Analytics may also set cookies in your browser (see sections 3 and 4).
2

How we use it

  • To operate, secure, and improve the site.
  • To reply to you if you email us.
  • To comply with the law and prevent abuse.

We don't sell your personal information, and we don't build user profiles.

3

Advertising, affiliate links & third-party vendors

We use third-party advertising, including Google AdSense, to support the site. These vendors may use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to collect information from your device in order to serve ads and measure their performance, sometimes based on your visits to this and other sites.

Google's use of advertising cookies is described on its How Google uses data page. You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings, the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out, or your browser's cookie controls. Opting out stops personalised ads, not all ads.

Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 in advanced Consent Mode to understand which pages are read and how the site performs. In the EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, analytics storage is denied before you choose. Google may receive limited cookieless pings in that state, but it may not use Analytics cookies. Granting analytics storage allows GA4 to set cookies and send fuller measurement. In regions where that consent message does not apply, GA4 may use analytics storage for ordinary measurement. We keep it to plain measurement — Google Signals is disabled. We also use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights (see section 5). Vercel states that Web Analytics stores anonymized aggregate data and does not use cookies.

Maps. Some pages — the Atlas map and the birthstones globe — load interactive maps from Mapbox. When a map loads, your browser contacts Mapbox directly, and Mapbox processes technical data such as your IP address and your interactions with the map in order to serve the map tiles, under its own privacy terms. Pages without a map never contact Mapbox.

Affiliate links. The district, birthstone, and jewellery-care shelves carry direct Amazon affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you click one, your browser leaves MyPiece and contacts Amazon, which may set cookies or collect data to attribute a resulting purchase and pay us a commission. That click-out is governed by Amazon's privacy notice. MyPiece may also record an anonymous affiliate-click event containing the page family, shelf ID, selection ID, and ASIN, subject to your analytics consent where required. We do not send the full affiliate URL, product title, or personal data in that event, and we never receive your payment details or learn what you bought.

4

Cookies & your consent choices

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. On MyPiece the non-essential ones come from the advertising and analytics described above. Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights operate separately from Google's consent controls; Web Analytics is cookieless and records anonymized aggregate page-view data.

Google consent follows regional requirements. In the EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, Google's message appears before Google may use advertising or analytics storage. You can accept all, reject all, or choose which purposes to allow. Advertising and analytics are separate, so you can permit one and refuse the other. Before you choose, and after a rejection, the relevant storage signals remain denied. Under advanced Consent Mode, Google tags may still send cookieless consent and measurement pings, but they may not set advertising or Analytics cookies for a denied purpose. Outside those regions, Google tags may use storage for ordinary analytics and advertising measurement, subject to the regional controls and opt-outs described here. Google applies restricted data processing to applicable US state opt-out signals.

Where Google's consent message is available, you can change or withdraw your choice using the “Cookie settings” control in the footer. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work.

5

Hosting

MyPiece is hosted on Vercel, which provides global delivery, caching, and security. In the course of serving the site, Vercel processes technical data such as IP addresses and request logs in line with its own privacy terms.

6

Sharing

We don't sell your personal information. We share data only:

  • with the service providers that run the site — Vercel (hosting & cookieless analytics), Google AdSense (advertising), Google Analytics (measurement), Mapbox (interactive maps, see section 3), and Google Gemini (the gemstone tool, see section 11), and
  • where the law requires it, or to protect rights and prevent abuse.
7

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the limited data involved. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

8

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold, or to opt out of marketing. Since we hold little more than emails you've sent us, exercising these is usually straightforward — just write to us.

9

Children

MyPiece isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal data.

10

Accuracy of our content

MyPiece is an editorial directory: we research carefully and cite our sources, but details about real places and businesses change, and some information may be incomplete or out of date. Always verify specifics — hours, prices, availability — directly with the business before relying on them.

11

The Gemstone Identifier tool

The "What stone is this?" tool sends the photo you choose to Google's Gemini API to generate a result. The image is downscaled on your own device first — which strips its EXIF metadata, including any GPS/location — then sent for that single request, processed transiently, and not stored by us. Google's handling of data sent to its AI services is governed by Google's privacy policy.

Example reference images shown with a result are loaded from Wikimedia Commons; when they load, your browser contacts Wikimedia directly. The tool creates no account, profile, or saved history.

12

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Updated" date at the top of the page.
